One mosquito pool that was positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis has been detected in Quincy.  Although the mosquito species in which the virus was detected is primarily a bird-biting species, residents are urged to use caution and to protect themselves by using repellent and long -sleeved and legged clothing.

-Six mosquito pools (groups of mosquitoes) that were positive for the West Nile Virus have been detected in Quincy.

-Two pools were identified as being a mammal-biting species.

-As early season sports activities begin, residents are reminded that mosquitoes are attracted to both body heat and carbon dioxide and both are produced in higher amounts during physical activity. Participants are encouraged to use mosquito repellent to help reduce their exposure to mosquito bites.

-As we move into the later part of mosquito season, mosquito populations are decreasing but older mosquitoes are also more likely to carry virus. With cooler overnight temperatures, mosquito activity will be concentrated during the dusk and early evening hours. It is particularly critical at this time of year to use mosquito repellent and use clothing to reduce exposed skin.

-People, especially those over 50 and/or immunocompromised, are strongly encouraged to use repellent and cover up to reduce mosquito bites.

-To date there has been one human fatality from EEE in Norfolk County (Weymouth) and the first human cases (2) of WNV (non-fatal) have been reported from Plymouth and Norfolk Counties.

-Residents are also encouraged to practice source reduction:
• Drain buckets, barrels, tarps, and wheel barrows to avoid water accumulation
• Change the water twice each week in birdbaths and outdoor pet water dishes
• Keep rain gutters clean of debris
• Check children's outdoor toys for water accumulation
